9th Flash Photo Weekend

Iliso Labantu photographers have just completed their ninth Flash Photo Weekend project, which was held in Lwandle township, near Somerset West in Cape Town. Fourteen young township based photographers took part in the two day project which was hosted by the excellent Lwandle Museum of Migrant Labour History. An outdoor exhibition was staged the following weekend. The photographers were invited to document the daily life of the township and were mentored as they went by a group of professional photographers and photographic teachers who generously gave their time and energy to support the project.

The photographers from Iliso Labantu have been asked to submit a photo essay to the Christmas edition of the Big Issue Magazine here in Cape Town. The theme of their work will be Football in the Townships. Ten of the group are busy collecting images for a joint edit to be submitted in early December. The project is intended to start the group's preparation for the World Cup in 2010 and to build a database of editorial images around football.

Month of Photography Exhibition

The fourth Cape Town Month of Photography festival happened in October 2008. Iliso Labantu proudly staged an exhibition entitled 'Structural Necessity' at our studio in the heart of Cape Town. The 150 images were drawn from our eight previous Flash Photo Weekends and specifically looked at the issue of housing for the city's Xhosa population. The laminated prints were mounted onto corrugated zinc sheets throughout the space. The sheets were purchased from people as they took down their shacks to make way for brick houses - progress indeed!
